Virtual Signing of the MOU between AAET and ATSE, 15-9-2020

MEDIA RELEASE By ATSE on 12 Oct 2020

Academies strengthen regional relationships and collaboration in STEM

The Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE) and the ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology (AAET) have entered into a memorandum of understanding to strengthen the collaboration between the two Academies in applied science, technology and engineering.

Both ATSE and AAET bring leading thinkers and eminent technologists and engineers from across the region together to exchange and collaborate on ideas and solutions to solve some of the biggest challenges of our respective societies.

ATSE President Professor Hugh Bradlow said the MOU is an important occasion. “We live in a time of great peril in the sense that we’ve seen in the last few years a rise in nationalism, a retreat of globalism, and I think it’s extremely important that we as scientists and engineers get together and collaborate across the world,” Professor Bradlow said.

“It’s a global world with global problems that we need to solve together.” AAET Emeritus Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Chuah Hean Teik said there is a mutual benefit in the scientific, engineering and technological interchange between Australia and the ASEAN countries. “I look forward to more joint activities like seminars, R&D and student and staff exchange between ASEAN and Australia,” Dr Chuah said.

The Memorandum of Understanding provides for collaboration between the two Academies to:
  • Promote engineering and technology education, research and industrial collaboration between ASEAN countries and Australia
  • Promote skills and workforce development in the management, innovation and development of engineering, science and technology in ASEAN and Australia
  • Nurture an innovation culture within ASEAN and Australian communities, especially amongst younger people
  • Facilitate joint engineering and technological workshops, assemblies, conferences, seminars, dialogues, publications, or other activities aimed at establishing and strengthening relationships and cooperation between scientists, engineers and technologists in ASEAN and Australia
  • Exchange information and publications for mutual benefit.
Professor Bradlow said Australia and ASEAN countries face similar challenges in areas such as climate and energy, waste and resource recovery, health and medical digitisation and agrifood sustainability.

Kuala Lumpur Engineering Science Fair (KLESF)

The ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology (AAET), Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT), The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) and the National Science Centre (NSC) had jointly and successfully organized the inaugural KLESF or KLESF 2014 on 25-27 April at National Science Centre (NSC) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

IMG-20140503-WA0020.jpg

The main objective of KLESF is to stimulate students' interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic (STEM) and encourage them to pursue future careers in STEM fields.

The KLESF 2014 also complements the Malaysian Government's Science to Action (S2A) programme which requires Science and Technology to take centre stage in steering a balanced socio-economic development in Malaysia.

KLESF also brings together the participation of business and industry in promoting learning and career development in areas related to STEM among students and the community. In this respect, the KLSEF is a concrete initiative to foster networking among schools, educators, public and private sectors to share information and experiences on projects, extra-curriculum and good practices in STEM education.

Six major sub programmes of KLESF

    • Science Hands-on Demos and Experiments
    • Mathematics and Mental Literacy Activities
    • School Engineering and Science Design Mentorship Programme (SESDM)
    • School STEM projects exhibition
    • Industry Science, Technology & Engineering Exhibition
    • Posters and Videos Exhibition on STEM

KLESF.jpg

School Engineering & Science Design Mentorship Program (SESDM)

The SESDM is one of the sub-programmes of KLESF.  It is based on the concept of guiding and mentoring students on STEM investigative and design activities and projects. SESDM is also set off with the aim of complementing the existing school STEM curriculum which may lack hands-on components. A pilot run of the programme was successfully implemented in Malaysia in 2014 and it will be extended to other ASEAN member states.
