Ir. Professor Dato' Dr. Ewe Hong Tat

Professor Ewe Hong Tat obtained his Bachelor of Engineering (1st Class Hons) degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Malaya, Malaysia, Masters of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from M.I.T., USA and PhD degree from Multimedia University, Malaysia.
 
He had worked before in Motorola Penang, Intel Penang, MIT’s Research Laboratory for Electronics, University of Malaya and Multimedia University (MMU) where his last position held in MMU was Vice President (Academic). He was Vice President (Internationalisation and Academic Development) of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) from July 2009 to August 2019. He is currently the President/CEO of UTAR and also a Senior Professor of Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science of UTAR. He was also the recipient of a number of awards including The Young Scientist Award of URSI (International Union of Radio Science) in 1996, The Outstanding Young Malaysian Award 2005 for Academic Leadership and Accomplishment, and The Toray Science and Technology Award by Malaysian Toray Science Foundation in 2011. He is currently a Fellow of Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), Fellow and President of ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology (AAET), Chairman of Science, Technology and Innovations Consultative Committee of ACCCIM, Former Chair of IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society Malaysia Chapter, Educational Counsellor and Regional Chair (Malaysia) of MIT Educational Council, Former President of MIT Club of Malaysia, and was a Council Member of Malaysia Qualifications Agency (MQA) from 2013-2018. 
 
In publication, he has published in books, international journals and conferences, and newspaper and magazine column articles. His research interests include microwave remote sensing, satellite image processing, wireless sensor network and intelligent computing. He is also active in consultancy and technopreneur development works and was a consultant/advisor for several listed and startup companies in Malaysia.

Dr. Chuah Hean Teik graduated with a BEng (First Class Honours), MEngSc and PhD in electrical engineering, all from University of Malaya, Malaysia, in 1986, 1988 and 1992, respectively. From July 1988-April 1997, he was on the faculty of the Electrical Engineering Department of the University of Malaya. From March-Nov 1994, he was a Fulbright Scholar at the Wave Scattering Research Centre, University of Texas at Arlington, USA.  From May 1997 – Jan 2008, Dr Chuah was  a Senior Professor at the Multimedia University, during which he held various posts as Vice President (R&D and Academic Development), Dean of Engineering, and Director of Research. From June 2001-Jan 2008, he also assumed the duty of the Penang State Government Professor of ICT in MMU.He was the President of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) in Malaysia from April 2008 - September 2019.


His research interests include microwave remote sensing, applied electromagnetics, and wave propagation for indoor and outdoor communications. He has authored/co-authored more than 230 papers in international journals and conferences. Dr. Chuah has received many awards, locally and internationally. Among them include the Professor Chin Fung Kee Gold Medal for Engineering Management subject in 1986, the inaugural Young Engineer Award by the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia in 1991; the 1990 Young Scientist Award at the 23rd General Assembly of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI) at Prague, Czechoslovakia;  the 1993 Young Scientist Award at the 24th General Assembly of URSI at Kyoto, Japan; the 1995 Young Scientist Award (Industrial Sector) by the Malaysian Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment;the 1999 Malaysian Toray Science Foundation Science and Technology Award for his contributions in the area of microwave remote sensing; the 2002 Sterling Award from the Sterling Group of Universities (research-based universities in UK with engineering faculties) for his services to promotion of engineering profession; 2011 IET Malaysia Outstanding Achievement Award; and Rotary Charity Foundation of Kuala Lumpur Research Gold Medal 2012 for excellence in original research and significant achievement in the field of electrical engineering. In collaboration with Malaysian Centre for Remote Sensing, his research team working on “Paddy Monitoring and Yield Prediction System using Remote Sensing and GIS Technologies” won a Gold Medal at the 2003 Malaysian Science and Technology Expo,and a Gold Medal at the 32nd International Exhibition of Inventions at Geneva in 2004. In recognition of his valuable services, the Governor of the State of Penang Malaysia conferred upon him an Order of Chivalry, Darjah Setia Pangkuan Negeri, which carries the title “Dato”, in July 2005. For his significant contribution in engineering profession, he was awarded Honorary Doctor of Engineering by Multimedia University in August 2013.

 

Dr. Chuah is an eminent technical leader and is very active in professional bodies. He is the Immediate Past President  of the Federation of Engineeering Institutions of Asia and the Pacific (FEIAP). Dr. Chuah was the President of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (2009-2011) and Council Member of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (2007-2011). He is a Senior Fellow of the Academy of Sciences, Malaysia; Hon. Fellow of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations and the Institution of Engineers Malaysia; a Founding Fellow of the ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology; Fellow of the Remote Sensing & Photogrammetry Society, UK; the Institution of Engineering and Technology, UK; the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, USA; and the Electromagnetics Academy, USA. He is also a Professional Engineer in Malaysia,a Chartered Engineer registered with the Engineering Council, UK; an APEC, EMF and ASEAN Engineer; Hon. Member of the Golden Key International Honour Society; and Hon. Member of Myanmar Engineering Society. Academician Datuk Ir. Hong Lee PeeBE (Hons), PJN, CEng, FIEM, FICE, FASc, SFAAET, FAETDEW

Datuk Ir Hong Lee Pee is the Immediate Past President and Senior Fellow of AAET. He is also the Senior Fellow of Academy of Science Malaysia (ASM), Professional Engineer of Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), Chartered Engineer of Institution of Civil Engineering, UK (ICE), Fellow of Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM), Hon. Fellow of ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations (AFEO) and Fellow of the Academy of Engineering and Technology of the Developing World (AETDEW).

Datuk Hong is also a Council member and a member of the Planning and Development Committee of the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia (UTAR) since 2017. He was the former Board Chairman of the Social Security Organization of Malaysia (SOCSO) from 2001-2009 and the Honorary Consul of Lithuania in Malaysia from 2007-2015.

Datuk Hong had played active roles in various business associations and socio-economic think tanks. He was the National Council Member & Treasurer, as well as the Chairman of the STI Committee of the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ACCCIM). From 2005-2009, he served as the Secretary General of the Malaysian Chinese Economic Consultative Council (MCECC), a think tank jointly established by the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA), ACCCIM and a few other Chinese associations of Malaysia.

Datuk Hong is an expert in foundation piles and geotechnical engineering. He had innovated/invented a number of engineering products, processes and systems over the period 1984-1999. A number of his Innovations/Inventions over the period of 15 years were filed for Patents. Amongst them, the most notable and with significant contributions to the geotechnical engineering field are: Tripile, Two Pile Test and IFP Penetrometer; and the innovative design concept of “Airport above the sea”, which was a major breakthrough and granted for a Patent period of 25 years by a number of countries including USA.

Datuk Hong founded the PILECON Engineering Sdn Bhd in 1980. He then grew the company to become PILECON Berhad, the 1st construction company listed in the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE) in 1983. The company had contributed significantly to the transformation of the construction industry of Malaysia.

Datuk Hong had presented over 60 lectures and papers to engineering & business communities, students in high schools and undergraduates in higher learning institutions. The publisher associated with the China Ministry of Construction had compiled some of these lectures/papers and published a book in the second half of Dec 2011. He had also submitted a number of papers related to science and technological fields to social, economic and statutory bodies, including a policy paper on “Innovation Policy for Green Growth” for the Proposed Nation Innovation Policy prepared by the Agensi Innovasi Malaysia (formerly known as Unit Innovasi Khas or UNIK) under the Prime Minister Department of Malaysia.

In the recent years, Datuk Hong focused on promoting the awareness of the importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to students, undergraduates and business community. During his term as AAET President, he had initiated the annual Kuala Lumpur Engineering Science Fair (KLESF) to promote the interest of STEM among primary and secondary school students. Currently, the KLESF is an annual event jointly organized by the ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology (AAET), The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT), Malaysian Invention and Design Society (MINDS), Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TARUC) and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR).

Academician Dato’ Ir. (Dr.) Lee Yee Cheong, BE Hons (University of Adelaide), Hon Doc Eng (UNITEN), DPMP, KMN, AO.


He is a member of the National Science and Research Council, Malaysia; Member of the Malaysian Global Science Innovation Advisory Council (GSIAC) at the New York Academy of Sciences; Chairman of Governing Board, the Institute of Energy Policy and Research (IEPRe), National Energy University Malaysia (UNITEN); Adjunct Professor of UNITEN; Pro Chancellor, Infrastructure University Malaysia; Patron of the International Young Professionals Foundation; and Member of the International Advisory Board of “Engineers Without Borders” Canada. He is a member of Board of Trustees, Future University, Sudan and Advisor, Pro-Tem Committee, African Academy of Engineering and Technology.

He was a Member of the National Economic and Social Council Kenya 2005-2011; Member of the International Advisory Board, Grand Challenges Canada 2008-2011. He was President and now Distinguished Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia. He was Member of the Board of Engineers Malaysia and the Board of Architects Malaysia and President of the World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO) 2003-2005. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, UK; the Institution of Civil Engineers, UK; Engineers Australia; and Institution of Engineers, Mauritius. He is Honorary President of Commonwealth Engineers Council (CEC).

He was Co-Chair of Task Force “Science, Technology and Innovation” of the United Nations Millennium Project 2002-2005; Member of the Board of Trustees of Engineers Against Poverty, U.K and Member of the International Commission for Education for Sustainable Development Practice, Earth Institute, Columbia University 2006-2008. He represented WFEO in UNCSD Civil Society Major Group “International Science and Technology Community” 2001-2006, in that capacity, he attended World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), Johannesburg 2002 and the World Summit on Information Societies (WSIS), Tunis 2005.

He served with the National Electricity Board Malaysia, 1961-1979. He founded and was CEO of Tenaga Ewbank Preece and later KTA Tenaga 1980-2002. He became a Partner of Ewbank Preece Consulting Group, UK; He was Board Director of UMW Holdings Berhad 2000-2008; Commissioner of the Energy Commission of Malaysia 2005-2009; Advisor to the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Malaysia 2006-2007; and Council Member of Badan Warisan Malaysia (Heritage Organisation Malaysia), 2005-2009.

He is founding Secretary General and Senior Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia; the founder President of the ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology; Foreign Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering; Corresponding Member of the Pan-American Academy of Engineering; Board Member of the InterAcademy Council (IAC) of the world’s scientific academies 2001-2004; Special Advisor to IAC Co-Chairs on Sustainable Energy 2008-2009.

He was co-author of the UN Millennium Project Science Technology and Innovation Task Force Study Report “Innovation: Applying Knowledge in Development”, 2005. He published his autobiography “Think Malaysian, Act Global” September 2010.

Dato’ Ir. Lee was conferred the Malaysian state awards of DPMP and KMN; the Honorary Officer of the Order of Australia (AO); In 2011 He was awarded the Korean Jang Yeong-sil Grand International Science and Cultural Prize and the Hon. Doctor of Engineering by UNITEN.
