2010 INTERNATIONAL ENERGY CONFERENCE (IEC)

2010 AAET International Energy Conference (2010 IEC), 30th Oct 2010

The third in biennial AAET series of International Energy Conference, i.e. 2010 International Energy Conference (2010 IEC) was successfully held on 30th October 2010 at Renaissance Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. 

 

The theme of 2010 IEC was “Green & Renewable Energy for Sustainable Development.”  Among the Distinguished role players included nuclear energy expert from Korea Dr. Chung Kunm;  Former Vice President of Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), Prof. Du Xiangwan and Chairman of ISTIC Governing Board cum Immediate Past President of AAET, Dato Ir Lee Yee Cheong. Other speakers and panelists for the Conference were green energy and climate change experts from ASEAN member states and East Asian Countries.

In his welcoming speech, AAET President Datuk Ir Hong Lee Pee called on ASEAN Member States to establish an ASEAN Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan), modelled after the European SET-Plan. The primary objective of the SET-Plan is to develop Low-carbon technologies through the coordinated research among the ASEAN Member States. Under the coordination framework of SET-Plan, the less capable and under-developed Member States will also have the opportunities to jointly share the relevant technologies with other Member States, thus moving towards a Low-carbon regional community in ASEAN.

Datuk Ir Hong’s ASEAN SET-Plan idea was commended and supported by the Secretary-General of Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water of Malaysia (KeTTHA) Datuk Loo Took Gee who represented the Minster of KeTTHA H.E Dato Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui to inaugurate the 2010 IEC.  The Conference had assembled more than 200 participants from the academia, governmental sectors, industries and NGOs across the ASEAN and Asian Pacific countries. It was concluded by a KL Declaration which reiterated the Datuk Ir Hong’s proposal of establishing an ASEAN SET-Plan.

In Conjunction with the 2010 IEC, AAET also jointly organized a Green Technopreneur Workshop with University of Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) on 29th October 2010, i.e. one day before the 2010 IEC. The Workshop was conducted by four facilitators from different fields of expertise, they were:     Professor Hang Chang Chieh from Singapore, expert on green innovation;  Professor Ho Chee Cheong from Malaysia, expert on new materials and process in green industry; Ar Von Kok Leong, expert on green building; and Ir Ong Ching Loon, expert on energy efficiency policies.

The Workshop had sucessfully attracted more than 100 young technopreneurs, young engineers, and undergraduates.
